Why I love living in San Diego (in no particular order)

(1) The weather here is always awesome (it rarely rains and it's rarely cloudy)
(2) I can wear open-toed shoes and flip-flops all year round
(3) Our beautiful house and the wonderful landscaping my hubby designed
(4) I never, never ever never ever, have to shovel snow, or scrape frost off my car
(5) Alberto's - and any other Mexican restaurant that end's with "erto's"
(6) Carne Asada Burritos are available 24/7 (see #5)
(7) You can find lumpia in the frozen section of almost any grocery store
(8) It's only a 5 hour flight to Hawaii
(9) Vegas is less than an hour's flight away
(10) There aren't ridiculously long waiting lists to eat at the restaurants here
(11) The plethora of Filipino markets and restaurants (and the huge Filipino community)
(12) Not that we go often, but there are tons of beaches to choose from
(13) The many more hiking trails we have yet to explore
(14) Seaport Village - I love taking our out-of-town guests there
(15) Aloha shirts are the norm here, so the hubby fits right in
(16) We can sleep with our bedroom window open at least 50 weeks a year
(17) In-N-Out burgers & fresh cut fries
(18) Fish tacos (oooh - Wahoo's and Rubio's) and fresh fish in general (ahhh - Vera Cruz Fish House and the Chart House)
(19) The laid-back attitude and atmosphere
(20) Of course, all the wonderful friends and family that we have out here
(21) Not having to switch out the clothes in my closet for the different seasons
(22) Seeing the ocean along the 5
(23) Not having to deal with crazy humidity or the "wind chill factor"
(24) The occassional celebrity spotting
(25) It's been our home for the last 9 years and we can't imagine living any where else

Black Friday 2008

Wow - for the first time in many, many years - hubby and I did not wake up before 5am to hit the Black Friday sales today. For as long as I can remember - we would research the best deals that would be available the day after Thanksgiving (aka: Black Friday). We would wake up at 4am then go to Best Buy, Fry's and Staples where we would team up and have a strategy to rush and tackle the crowds for the great deals - like a Sony camcorder for $199; Compaq desktop, monitor and printer for $399; Samsung laser printer for $49; DVDs for $1.99, $3.99 and $5.99; my awesome Tom Tom for $99; MP3 players for $9.99; digital picture frames for $20; memory cards for $9.99; software, screen savers and games for FREE (after rebate); pay-as-you-go phones for $6.99; bluetooth headset for $19.99; and more that I just can't remember.

What's crazy is that even though the doors opened at 5am, and we would get there at about 4:45am, there were at least a hundred or so people there before us, if not more. The really dedicated Black Friday shoppers would get there before midnight and camp out at the front door - those folks got a special bracelet that gave them dibs on all the super super cheap doorbusters (like the big flat screen tv for only $499 - where there would only be 10 available). We were never that dedicated - but were always excited about the good deals we could get for ourselves and for Christmas gifts. The plan was always to split up, grab specific items, then one of us would get in the ridiculously long line, while the other person would continue to shop. We'd take turns shopping/standing in line...it was awesome.

This year we looked through all the ads... ALL of them... and nothing was exciting. Not a single thing. Nothing that was worth waking up before sunrise. We did, however, hit a couple of stores before 9am and picked up a couple of things. For the first time ever - we walked into Best Buy on Black Friday and walked out with nothing, absolutely nothing. I don't think Rob has ever walked out of Best Buy empty handed - it felt strange. Whoa...

Family Photo

Mom's going on a cruise next year for a reunion with her fellow nursing students from UST and needed to submit a recent family photo. Here we are at the Arrowood park - just 1 block over from our house. Ahhh - lovely San Diego - it's the end of November and were able to enjoy a sunny afternoon in the mid-70's. Gotta love SoCal :)

Kids Say the Darndest Things!

I have a friend who has the cutest twin girls that I've ever seen. They're 6 and have such different personalities. One is a girly girl and loves princesses. The other one is all into sports and loves pirates. I can't even express how super super cute they both are.

Anyhoo - my friend has shared some of the things they've said recently - and I absolutely loved the innocence that went with the questions they posed and their comments to go with them. Enjoy!

Kid: "Mom, what's a COCK nation?"
Mom: "A what!?"
Kid: (Sigh) "You know, Asian, Black, Native American, Cocknation!"

(OMG - "Caucasian" - hahahahaha!!!!!)

Kid: "Mom, what does 'pino' mean?" (pronounced "pee-no")
Mom: "Where did you hear that?"
Kid: "From my friend at school. She said she's feelin pino, what does that feel like?"

(Her little friend is FILIPINO - awwww, she thought "pino" was a feeling or emotion!)

And last year, when they were 5, they told the cutest knock-knock joke:

Knock, Knock.
Who's there?
"Tank".
"Tank" who?
You're welcome!

Heeheeheeheeheehee.

Kids. Gotta love them :)

Yes, ANOTHER fire @ Camp Pendleton

Taken in our cul-de-sac, to the left of our house. Our first site of the fire...
Here's one of the plane's we heard fly over our house several times -
those guys were working hard dropping flame retardants!
It's a little small, but if you look to the left you can see another plane...

We really thought we were going to get evacuated when we saw this...

Who could sleep with this going on???

Yesterday was a crazy crazy day. All afternoon we watched the fire from our bedroom window and on the news - literally at the same time. It was crazy - We could see and hear the airplanes dumping water from our window. Rob went up on the hill to take photos (I know, he's crazy, huh!?)

Thankfully the winds were calm and we didn't have to evacuate. The neighborhood 2 blocks over from us was evacuated. Our intersection has been blocked off from any incoming traffic. We watched the news all night and were on alert if we received a reverse-911 call. What was so annyoying is that we kept getting pre-recorded soliciation calls - argh!!! To make it worse - one was from "OFD", which we thought was "Oceanside Fire Department" - it was a pre-recorded call for votes - what the heck!!??

I am so thankful for the many many phone calls and texts that we received from friends and family. We are so very blessed to have these people in our lives. Many have called to check in on my parents because they weren't sure if I was home or not - and many have called to offer for us to stay at their homes. I am so thankful for the love that we are surrounded with.

Thank you Dulia, Tita Edna, Eddie, Jeffery, Nini, Magi, Matt & Kim (with Matt's bum leg and all he offerred to help us if we needed to load up our cars!), Dana, Heather, Stephanie, Jim, and whoever else I may have forgotten - thank you thank you thank you!!!

Fire @ Camp Pendleton 10/8/2008

Wow - it's that time of the year again. Fire season. About one year ago today we had some terrible brush fires. Thankfully we didn't have to evacuate. Last year we could see the fire at Camp Pendleton from our bedroom window and helicopters with water flew right over our house. It was crazy.

So another fire started at Camp Pendleton this afternoon. It's getting close - but we're not concerned - at least not yet. Here are some pics that Rob has taken of the fire... yikes!!!

Miss Jackson if You're Nasty

We saw Janet Jackson in concert on Saturday. It was awesome! The last time I saw her we were so far away we needed binoculars to see her. This time we were super close to the stage and could clearly see her sweat. Wow. Good times :)

From Miss to Mrs. - Em

After writing that last blog, I'm at a loss for what to write next. Seriously, wasn't that an awesome blog? How the heck do I top that?

So in honor of my girls, I decided to share some pics from bachelorette parties and weddings. Let us begin with Emelyn. Hope you enjoy!

BU Days, circa 1992 & 1994

Em's Bachelorette Party - San Diego

Memorable moment: Stopping at Starbucks, in the Gaslamp, with the large you-know-what-shaped-bacehlorette-paraphernalia (courtesy of Eileen). The barrista was a short, older, Indian man - he took one look at the, ahem, and said "Oh! Right size, wrong color!"

Sadly - the only group photos I have of us from Em's wedding.
(The B.R.C. era - Before Rob's Camera era)

Memorable moments:
(1) Walking through Chinatown and NYC with Denise as our tour guide, "It's right there!" and "Run!" Uh-huh, yeah.
(2) All of us together and singing karaoke at Em's parents house the night before the wedding.
(3) Rob & I hanging out with Eileen & Bobby for the first time.

Hubby's Tux & My Girls

My bestestest friend got married a few weeks ago. It was a formal, black tie event. The Mr. did some major research in order to ensure his tuxedo met the qualifications of a "formal event". This is what he wore... and yes, ladies and gentlemen, he bought this tux - which means he can wear it again. (Ay nako!)

Wow... I must really love him.... ...yeah, that's him in the powder-blue-Karate-Kid tuxedo. I must admit, he was truly within the definition of "formal" attire.

So he tells me that the priest walked up to him and said: "Son, I really like your tuxedo!"
Husband: "Thank you, Father. Can I ask you a favor?"
Priest: "What is it, son?"
Husband: "Can you talk to my wife about forgiveness?" (insert laughter here)

FYI - the tux is still at the dry cleaner's. I'm hoping he forgets to pick it up. Don't they donate clothes that are left after a certain period of time? Hahaha!

These are my girls and our other halves...(minus Keith, where was he? Darn! We never were able to get a picture of the 12 of us that day. And look at my hubby - always a character when we take pictures - ay yah yay!)

The last time we were all together was at Jane's wedding 2 years ago. I love these girls. We're family, we're always there for one another and we'd do anything for each other. Anything. The guys nicknamed us "Voltron" because of the way we join together. Seriously, when united we BU girls form a powerful team that can kick ass and take over the world, if that's what we feel like doing that day:

Em - my first dearest friend at BU. She lives all the way in CT. She's the one who stays calm through anything. Seriously, anything. If you've got a problem, she's got the solution. Period. If you don't like what she has to say then, "Eh!"

Memorable Moments: (1) "I'm flying!" (Freshman year, wow, so long ago!); (2) The story of her and her brother when they were kids, "...He put his finger in, but he couldn't take it out!" (It sounds dirty, but I swear it isn't); (3) When Jane & I ruined a tender moment by, ahem, tackling Em and her new hubby with a big fat hug on the dance floor. (We didn't believe it until we saw it on video.)

Denisesee - met her through Em. A true New Yorker down to the core. She's a little dyslexic (ex: loft instead of loaf, opium instead of opal, whining instead of weaning) but that's what makes her so unique and we love her even more for it. After meeting some of her childhood friends we realized that she didn't talk funny after all, it turns out that most people who grew up in New York's Chinatown area have that same accent (hahaha!) The two of us have a special bond that none of our other friends have...let's just say it has something to do with celebrating special bathroom experiences. Even though she's all the way in NY, I still cherish the texts, voicemails or emails that only she or I can appreciate.

Memorable moments: (1) Rushing home between classes to watch Animaniacs; (2) Vodka and head banging to "My Sharona"; (3) "Where's the cake?" (I still laugh so hard that my stomach hurts!)

Princess neeliE - our mediator. She's the one who can listen to any side of a story and give honest and unbiased feedback. She truly lives by the motto I started back in college: "Say what you mean, mean what you say" and is the only person I know that can tactfully tell it like it is, without hurting your feelings. We lived together for three years in college and those were the best three years we had at BU! Her facial expressions alone can make you laugh so hard that you might pee your pants! Even though we only live about an hour apart, we don't see each other nearly as much as we should. But when we do - it's always a blast! We used to play phone-tag for weeks and weeks, but lately we've been pretty lucky and have been able to squeeze in phone calls during our morning or afternoon commutes.

Memorable moments: (1) Seeing her make a snow angel for the first time; (2) Laughing so hard together, on the T with all the girls, that she literally peed her pants; (3) Playing roulette in Vegas, at Cathy's Bachelorette Weekend, and winning big time!

Jane-dangle-ahgatay - where do I begin? This girl is my rock. She lives in Northern Cali, but that doesn't stop us from talking to each other frequently during the week. And both of us talk a lot... really, A LOT. She's got stories to tell, lots of them - and no matter who she's imitating, they all sound the same. One of our favorites was her imitation of her father, and the infamous quote, "Stop. Think about it. Come back." She always finds a way to make you laugh - sometimes without even trying. No matter what you're going through, she's there, unconditionally. She's all heart and I absolutely love her for that.

I already shared one memorable moment, so if I had to pick only two others, they would have to be:

(1) In college, at a club, an Indian guy stopped her as we walked from the bar to the dance floor,

Indian guy: "Hey, are you Indian?"
Jane: "Yeah."
Indian guy: "So where are you from?"
Jane: "Africa, mother-*bleep*, where else would I be from? Duh, India!"

(Oh my gosh, that one never gets old!)

(2) Our epiphany at her wedding reception. Through the years, when we would go clubbing, girlfriend would bust out some funky moves, all by herself, where she would flail her arms about. We just figured it was a goofy Jane thing. Then on her wedding day, at the wedding reception, we saw her 100+ family members doing those same moves and looking awesome. We then realized, (gasp!), "so that's what it's supposed to look like!" Wow. It was bad ass.

Cathy-with-a-"C" - my little sister and bestestest friend in the whole wide world and beyond. Other than our hubbies, we pretty much complete each other. It's scary how close we are - it seems like whenever we think of the other - our phone rings or we get a text message. We've been through thick and thin, and everything imaginable in between. (However it nearly killed me when her guy told me that he was going to propose and I couldn't share it with her!) We can say things to each other that we wouldn't dare say to anyone else. We share things with each other that we will take to our graves. If we need anything from the other, consider it done, no questions asked. It's cheeseball, but really, "Life made us friends, Love made us sisters."

Memorable moments: (1) Our Thanksgiving in Miami where it took us at least half an hour, each time, to realize when we were in a gay cafe, on a gay beach, or in a gay club; (2) Our Spring Break trip to Hawaii - if you get the chance watch the wedding video, I share this one in my toast; (3) Grabbing her ass to get her attention when we were at The Bank Nightclub in Vegas... She turned around and said, "Stop grabbing my ass!", to which I calmly replied, "Girl, the first time you felt someone grab your ass, it wasn't me!", I wish I had my camera to take a picture of her face at that exact moment. Hmmm, no wonder she didn't turn around the first time!

Who's Bored?

Ahhhh.... it's been a loooong time since I've had a Sunday all to myself. In the last several months there were always multiple errands to run, guests to entertain, people to see, and of course the countless wedding events (prospect meetings, client meetings, bridal showers, weddings, and of course - everything that went into being the Maid of Honor at my best friend's wedding - that's right, I said "Maid" of Honor - "Matron" of Honor sounds so yuck!) Anyhoo - with absolutely no scheduled events on my calendar (whoo hoo!) and my hubby having Naval Reserve Duty today - I took advantage of the time and hung out with me, myself and I.

It was awesome. After morning mass I made myself breakfast, then went out to get pampered with a massage and mani/pedi. I then made a quick trip to Costco (couldn't put it off any longer - we were down to two rolls of toilet paper) where I planned dinner for the week and feasted on many delicious samples.

On my way home I decided to call my nieces and godson in Florida. Everyone was fine, however each kid had to make it a point to tell me, individually, that they only had two days of school last week "because of da hurricane" (they don't speak Tagalog, yet they sometimes have a Filipino accent - huh?) One of them then told me that they were bored and I realized...wow... I can't remember the last time I was bored... when we grow up, with everything going on in our lives, do we ever get bored anymore???

One of my best friends is 10 years older than me (she'll tell you 9, but really it's 10). Many many years ago, when I was home from college for summer break, I remember complaining that I was bored. My friend gasped and quickly replied, "What!? Oh my gosh, what I would give to be bored! I don't even remember what it feels like to be bored! With 4 kids - I'm never bored - seriously, I wish I could be bored, at least for just one day."

Back then, I had no idea what she was talking about. But now, I absolutely know what she means...

My First Blog Ever

Okay, so I'm a little late in the game. It seems that everyone and their mother, neighbor, sister, brother, co-worker's-hairdresser's-third cousin's-uncle, etc. blogs. So what's the big deal? I guess I'll have to find out as this is, historically, my first blog ever.

As I type, I have to wonder - what have I gotten myself into? Who's going to read this? Is this ultimately Skynet's attempt to gather human thoughts in it's ploy to take over the world?

Alas, I will have to wait and see...
